Once upon a time there was a warrior, who fought battles in distant lands and sent wealth back to his country. After years of winning battles and expanding territories, he expected to return to the land flourishing on the wealth and power that his conquests had brought.
When the warrior returned home, he was shocked to see his people in a miserable state. The country was suffering from economic depression, social unrest and corruption. The government was exploiting the people through excessive taxes, unjust loans and mismanagement of resources. People faced food shortages, unemployment and inequality, with young people roaming the streets without direction or opportunity. Along with the poor, veterans were also struggling.
He was struck by the stark contrast between his success on the battlefield and his misery at home. He had won many battles, but he was not prepared for this challenge.
At some point in our lives, we all face moments where we are unprepared for disappointing results. We unconsciously prepare for positive outcomes, because we naturally expect and hope for the best. We put all our efforts into winning the battle, without considering the consequences of our success or failure might bring. However, when things don’t go as planned, this mindset leaves us vulnerable and unprepared.
Like the warrior, when I faced the biggest battle of my life, I was not prepared for any disappointing outcome. My bright, shining success slowly turned into a dark failure. I wasn’t prepared for anything less than the best. My lack of preparation for unfavorable outcomes ultimately led to my defeat.
